Netflix Uptime Improvement

So over the weekend our editorial team has been busy answering user questions and doing some research on Netflix vs. Hulu issues–we were ecstatic to find out that Netflix has much better login performance compared to a lot of other streaming sites out there.  In fact, we detected that Netflix hasn’t had a major login issues since all the way back to November 2011. Below is a Twitter update they did explaining the last major outage that they had.

Netflix Refund Provided After Outage

Last fall, Netflix.com suffered a huge outage keeping millions of customers from streaming their favorite movies and TV shows. Customers were all over Twitter with Netflix complains and asked for refunds. Fortunately for customers, Netflix offered a pro-rated refund, meaning that for the period in which Netflix was down, the company offered a refund that amounted to 2-3% off your monthly bill. Not enough you might ask? Agreed! We asked our Netflix phone rep for an entire month off–we’re still working on getting that.

Below is a screenshot of a Netflix email that shows the 3% credit off the next billing statement. Put it in perspective–hours of not being able to watch Netflix and the company will only provide us $3 for the month.  As much as we love Netflix, that is simply not acceptable.  Did you get a refund?  Let us know in the comments below.

Netflix Down

Is Netflix down? Netflix outages usually only happen in the evenings between 4PM ET and 5PM ET, when people are home from work watching Netflix. Netflix goes down when the Netflix server has an outage, usually caused by having far too many customers accessing the service. If you try to steam movies from any Netflix-enabled device, you’ll get the message “Site Error — We were unable to process your request.” This just means Netflix is having an error and the technical team is at work restoring your streaming capability.

Below is an example of the message that you will see when the Netflix.com site is down, keeping you from logging in to stream your movies. Note that DVD by mail services is usually uninteruppted during periods of outage, but you will still not have access to your queue. The message posted on the Netflix websites during outages usually reads: “We’re sorry, the Netflix website is temporarily unavailable. Out shipping centeres are continuing to send and receive DVDs, so your movies will be processed as usual. Our engineers are working hard to bring the site back up as soon as possible.”

If you’re not sure if you’re having an issue, the best way to find out it to visit Twitter for and search for “netflix down” which will show you all the people who are tweeting about Netflix being broken. Also, Netflix will tweet about their outages to help customers understand what the issue with their service might be. An example is below of a Netflix tweet which apologies for the service disruption and outage. Usually Netflix is very proactive about notifying customers about Netflix login and password issues and site outages.
