Netflix Streaming-Only Service

Netflix’s streaming-only service debut last year and was a huge milestone for what began as a mail order DVD company. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings was quoted, “We are now primarily a streaming video company delivering a wide selection of TV shows and films over the Internet.” Hoooraay! Netflix is the web’s primary source of legal streaming content. Over half of Netflix customers and revenues are associated with Netflix streaming service.

What about Netflix streaming quality?

A lot of Netflix customers report worse quality with their streaming service. Netflix customers who have broadband internet connections generally don’t have any issues with Netflix streaming, but most of America doesn’t yet have broadband. The result is lower quality images and long wait times for your Netflix movies to download and buffer!

Netflix vs. Amazon

Netflix vs. Amazon? I thought it was Netflix vs. Hulu. There has been a ton of press in the last few days about Amazon’s new streaming service. Many are already calling it the “Netflix killer,” but this undoubtedly premature. Netflix has 4x the number of titles as Amazon and has also built a massive brand that resonates very strongly with consumers as the place to get movies by mail or online.

Before today — the conversation was about Netflix killing Hulu. The conversation has become: will Amazon kill Netflix? Right now, they don’t have enough high quality content to compete with Netflix. Their library only has 5,000 movie and television titles, as compared to Netflix’s 20,000. It is also made up of older library titles like Amadeus, Analyze This, and Syriana. But, this is only the beginning.

Exciting news stories generate a lot of buzz, but we think this one is overblown. Where do you go for MP3s? Amazon or iTunes? Most people still go to iTunes. If you’d like to judge the Netflix vs. Amazon battle for yourself, here’s a quick excerpt from the Amazon press release:

Amazon.com, Inc. today announced the launch of a new benefit for Amazon Prime members: unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of more than 5,000 movies and TV shows. This new benefit is being added at no additional cost — Prime membership will continue to be $79 per year. Amazon Prime’s all-you-can-eat free Two-Day Shipping has already attracted millions of members. Customers can learn more about an Amazon Prime one-month free trial and start watching instantly at www.amazon.com/primevideos.

What do you think? Who will win the Netflix vs. Amazon battle?

Lost Netflix Envelope

What do you do if you lost your Netflix envelope?

If you lost your Netflix envelope, don’t worry! This happens all the time and Netflix expects this. You won’t be penalized for losing your envelope and it won’t cost you dime. Millions of people lose their Netflix envelope every year, so don’t worry!

Here’s what you do if you lost your Netflix envelope:  Put the disc in the white sleeve of another Netflix disc and return both discs in one of our red prepaid return mailers. If you’re on a 1-out-at-a-time plan, just return the disc without the white sleeve in the red return mailer. The red mailer includes a special barcode that we can use to associate this returned disc with your Netflix account.

Here’s what you do if you lost both the envelope and the white Netflix sleeve: Just return the disc in your own return envelope and include a note with your Netflix account email address.  Be sure to include enough postage and mail it to the address below:

Netflix – 50 Most Innovative Companies

Netflix was honored by Fast Company by being included in the magazine’s list of the 50 Most Innovative Companies. The infographic shows when Netflix went public in 2002 there were many skeptics worrying about dot com failures and competing subscription businesses from companies like BlockBuster. In 2010, however, Blockbuster went bust! It’s stock was delisted from the NYSE and promptly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

How many customers does Netflix have?

Netflix has over 20 million subscribers!

By the end of 2010 Netflix was live streaming to over 200 different devices including Xbox, PlayStation, TiVo, and iPad. Netflix stock went up 229% in 2010!  Wow.
